NB - I think I filed this as a ‘newsletter’ accidentally at first so I apologise if it popped into anyone’s inbox…!

I’m still sorting through my pics taken in the US, some of which you can see on my Flickr site.

Recently I graduated…

and celebrated my 22nd birthday with all my family down to visit (I’m sure they won’t mind this blurred pic which obscures them from public view)… taken on the beach after our birthday BBQ.

This coming week, I am having some documentary filmmakers from Spain to visit… oo-er!

Upcoming Sep plans: exhibiting a couple of my pieces at the Lantern Media Festival in Tunbridge Wells this September (more about that later, as I’d like to spread the word about the festival) and plans to speak at Photokina in Germany…

Apart from that, anyone got any advice on cameras?
I am considering one of the following DSLRs: Nikon D80, Canon 40D, or Sony Alpha 350.
I’m thinking of the Canon primarily (almost ruled the Nikon out because I’ve been focusing on the other two). Considering the Sony primarily because it has a swivel screen like my current R1, it doesn’t turn 180 degrees. Is it just best to make a new start with a Canon?

You can also wait for the new Nikon D80x/D90 or the D300.

Count me as another vote for the 40D. I bought one last fall as a “backup” camera and it’s become my day-to-day workhorse. Love it.

That said, I haven’t used either the Nikon or Sony.

I am biased toward Sony but in your research, compare lenses. They all have quality glass but do differ some in prices. The lens will likely be with you a lot longer than the camera.

    Just my humble opinion.

I’m not au fait with the lens mount on the Sony, does it fit anything else? Your existing lenses (?) should be a chief concern obviously!

I have two D80 bodies as I don’t have time to change lenses when working. These are now very good value (try graysofwestminster.co.uk for a really good used deal) andd pack rather more features in than the Canon does.

I also echo Armando but those are gong to be expensive so you may be budget-influenced. The pro lenses from Nikkor have a reputation for being rather more reliable than the Canons too. Very subjective but I read enough complaints to switch a few years back.

    Hope that all helps.

I can only speak about the Nikon D-80. I have had one for almost eight months. I love it. It takes the best pictures of anything I have ever owned. I have taken nearly seven thousand shots with it without any problems whatsoever. I am sure the others are nice cameras as well, but the Nikon was my first choice in that price range, and was recommended to me by people in the know about such things. To use one recommender’s words. “Most Professionals use Nikon for a reason, they are just more dependable, and seem to have more features for the money”.

I am sure whatever you get , you will work magic with it as always.

Congrats on your degree. Best Wishes Natalia.

Canon is the market leader, but I think each of the options is perfectly capable of capturing the shots you want to take so it’s just a case of getting to know the operating system if you are changing brands.
The review at http://www.trustedreviews.com/digital-cameras/review/2008/04/08/Canon-EOS-40D/p1 is pretty cool. Click on the drop-down menu to see other pages and test shots. I dunno what the current price is, but Canons tend to cost slightly more than other brands for pretty much the same features. Despite this, they are incredibly popular on flickr, so you should be able to find people who can help you with any problems: http://www.flickr.com/cameras/canon/eos_40d/
I think you need to hold each camera in your hands to see what feels “right”, so get down to Jessops.

Personally, I’d go for the cheapest option, cos I’m a pikey. :)

i have a 40d and love it. before that i had the original Rebel and it did very well. nikon also has some great bodies out there too though, so it all boils down to taste. i don’t know much about sony, but from what i’ve heard those are also a wonderful product. i’d try feeling some out and see what control arrangement fits your shooting style best. i find the smaller privately owned shops are generally more knowledgeable as far as their product pro’s and con’s go as opposed to the cookie-cutter chains. good luck!

Hi - I too really enjoy your work. As to cameras.. i doubt you will find a camera with as good a lens as the Zeiss on the R1 or any with swivel. I routinely use Nikon D3, D2x digital and they are great, but the R1 is hard to beat, even with Nikon prime lenses. Given the work you do, you might want to consider using a Fuji S5 DSLR with Nikon lenses. The S5 has much greater dynamic range than any other DSLR available and its colors approximate Fujichrome film.. Velvia like in quality. It is a favorite of wedding photographers because its images out of the camera require little post production work and skin tones are unusually good. At this time, the S5 can be had very inexpensively due to competition from newer DSLR models such as those you’ve listed. However, since you are essentially shooting posed shots w/o a lot of action thd Fuji S5 might be an economical way to take a step up from Sony R1. I guarantee the Fuji color from its sensor and program is better than Sony and in my opinion better than Canon DSLRS and most of NIkons. Go to Jessops and take a look.. see some prints. Otherwise, I’d go w/ Nikon D300 or D700. Bear in mind that if you do pick up a high end DSLR.. it is not going to be point and shoot as the R1 and prosumer Nikon/Canons are. You have to master it as the pro versions give the user a huge amount of control over capture and internal processing compared to the prosumer units. A good place to look for reviews from users is the DPreview.com from England.

good luck and again, thanks for the wonderful and clever images.

Canon 50D officially announced and enough new features to make it a compelling buy. At $1300 it seems like a bargain. Should be out within a month from now.

Congrats on your graduation and let us know what you end up with!

Just a personal opinion in case you haven’t ordered one yet: Canon 50D, body only is between £800 and £900 from onestop-digital.com.

I don’t work for them or anything but I have always bought from them and found them to be the cheapest and most reliable source for expensive camera gear :-)
