Just a personal opinion in case you haven't ordered one yet: Canon 50D, body only is between £800 and £900 from onestop-digital.com.

I don't work for them or anything but I have always bought from them and found them to be the cheapest and most reliable source for expensive camera gear :-)

Canon 50D officially announced and enough new features to make it a compelling buy. At $1300 it seems like a bargain. Should be out within a month from now.

Congrats on your graduation and let us know what you end up with!
Regards,
-Javi

Hi - I too really enjoy your work. As to cameras.. i doubt you will find a camera with as good a lens as the Zeiss on the R1 or any with swivel. I routinely use Nikon D3, D2x digital and they are great, but the R1 is hard to beat, even with Nikon prime lenses. Given the work you do, you might want to consider using a Fuji S5 DSLR with Nikon lenses. The S5 has much greater dynamic range than any other DSLR available and its colors approximate Fujichrome film.. Velvia like in quality. It is a favorite of wedding photographers because its images out of the camera require little post production work and skin tones are unusually good. At this time, the S5 can be had very inexpensively due to competition from newer DSLR models such as those you've listed. However, since you are essentially shooting posed shots w/o a lot of action thd Fuji S5 might be an economical way to take a step up from Sony R1. I guarantee the Fuji color from its sensor and program is better than Sony and in my opinion better than Canon DSLRS and most of NIkons. Go to Jessops and take a look.. see some prints. Otherwise, I'd go w/ Nikon D300 or D700. Bear in mind that if you do pick up a high end DSLR.. it is not going to be point and shoot as the R1 and prosumer Nikon/Canons are. You have to master it as the pro versions give the user a huge amount of control over capture and internal processing compared to the prosumer units. A good place to look for reviews from users is the DPreview.com from England.

good luck and again, thanks for the wonderful and clever images.

i have a 40d and love it. before that i had the original Rebel and it did very well. nikon also has some great bodies out there too though, so it all boils down to taste. i don't know much about sony, but from what i've heard those are also a wonderful product. i'd try feeling some out and see what control arrangement fits your shooting style best. i find the smaller privately owned shops are generally more knowledgeable as far as their product pro's and con's go as opposed to the cookie-cutter chains. good luck!
